Nigerian Dwarf Goat Management
At Cowboy Logic's we take our goat management very seriously. We believe to have the best quality milk and babies we must use the best management techniques available. We only allow our does to be bred around one year of age and only plan one kidding per year with at least a two month dry period before kidding. We disbud all babies to prevent horns as we believe this is the safest for the goat. We also follow the protocols below:
Daily Feed and Nutrition:
Free Choice fresh clean water
Free Choice Dry Grass / Alfalfa Hay and / or Alfalfa Pellets, Weed Pasture
Grain Mix (amount depends on whether the goat is pregnant, dry or in milk)
(black oil sunflower seeds)(Vit E)
Minerals, Baking Soda
Periodic Nutrition and Health:
Probiotics after worming, kidding, and as needed.
CDT vaccine upon weaning
worming with ivermectin once yearly or as needed
Grooming:
Hoof Trimming every 4-6 weeks and clipping as needed for kidding or pictures
Shelter:
Rain:
Goats hate to be wet and it can actually be hazardous to their health to be exposed to the elements or kept in damp or muddy pens.
Sun:
Goats are very hardy animals, but no animal can be expected to be healthy and happy in the hot sun without shade. We have lots of trees for shade and also provide shade barn that houses all our pens. I highly recommend an additional shade source during the summer.
Goat Psychology / Herd Animals:
We recommend that all goats have at least one other goat to live with and complete their herd. Being a herd animal, means goats NEED constant companionship, usually of another goat. There are exceptions, but even if you think you and your goat are the exception you must be willing to adopt another goat in the likely scenario that your single goat is not content being single sooner or later. Lonely goats cause problems, escape often, endanger themselves, and are a general nuisance. We do not require that you buy your second goat from us at Cowboy Logic's. Often because of high demand do not have a second goat available, but recommend always buying from a healthy, disease free herd. We can usually recommend another herd with goats available if you need help finding a friend for your goat.
